Meet Kansas City’s Newest Streetcar

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority is excited to introduce the first of eight new streetcars for a project that’ll extend the line by 3.5 miles south. This extension will link Union Station with the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus, and it’s set to start running in early 2025.

What’s Happening with the Streetcar Extension Project?

As of November, they’ve already laid two-thirds of the tracks needed for the extension. CAF USA Inc., the company making the streetcars, will send a new vehicle to Kansas City about every four weeks. The latest streetcar, #807, joins the first six streetcars, numbered 801 to 806.

Each streetcar is 77 feet long, weighs 78,000 pounds, can go both ways on the track, and can fit up to 150 passengers at once. Streetcar #807 had its big public debut on Friday afternoon, after getting to Kansas City from Elmira, New York. Folks got their first look at the new vehicle on social media.

What’s Next for the Streetcar Line?

There are plans to stretch the streetcar line even more, adding 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. This project should kick off this year, with the goal of finishing by the end of 2025 or the start of 2026. The southern extension is gonna cost around $351 million, and the extra bit to Berkley Riverfront should be about $61.1 million.
