Big News: Kansas City’s Newest Streetcar Has Arrived!

Hey there, folks! We’ve got some exciting news for all you Kansas City lovers out there. The Kansas City Streetcar Authority just announced the arrival of the newest streetcar, and it’s a big deal for our city’s transportation system.

What’s the Deal with the New Streetcar?

So, this new streetcar is the first of eight that are being added to the line. They’re gonna help extend the line by 3.5 miles, going south from Union Station all the way to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. That’s gonna make it way easier for people living in areas like Sunset Hill, Rockhill, Volker, and the Country Club District to get around. The new section is set to start running in early 2025.

What’s Up with the Streetcar Construction?

As of November, they’ve already laid down two-thirds of the tracks needed for this extension. The company making the streetcars, CAF USA Inc., says they’ll be sending the rest of the streetcars for Kansas City about every four weeks. The one that just arrived is numbered #807, and it’s a beauty!

Streetcar #807: The Details

Streetcar #807 was unveiled on Friday afternoon, after making its way from Elmira, New York, to Kansas City. People got their first look at this new vehicle on social media. These streetcars are pretty impressive – they can go both ways on the track, are 77 feet long, weigh 78,000 pounds, and can hold up to 150 people at once.

More Streetcar Expansion Plans

But wait, there’s more! There’s also a plan to extend the streetcar line by 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. They’re hoping to start this project this year and have it up and running by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost to extend the streetcar line to the south is about $351 million, and the additional extension to Berkley Riverfront is expected to cost $61.1 million. But hey, it’s all about making our city more connected and easier to get around, right?
