Kansas City Streetcar Authority Welcomes Newest Streetcar

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority is super excited about the first of eight new streetcars for a project that’ll make the line 3.5 miles longer to the south. This is gonna connect Union Station with the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus and should be up and running by early 2025.

Progress on Streetcar Line Extension

As of November, they’ve already put down two-thirds of the tracks needed for this extension. The new streetcars, made by CAF USA Inc., will be coming to Kansas City about once every four weeks. The latest streetcar, numbered #807, comes after the first six streetcars, numbered 801 to 806. These streetcars are 77 feet long, weigh 78,000 pounds, and can fit up to 150 passengers at once. Plus, they can go both ways on the track.

Further Expansion Plans

On top of the southern extension, there are plans to make the streetcar line 0.7 miles longer from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. This project is supposed to start this year and be done by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026. The cost of the southern extension is about $351 million, while the extra part to Berkley Riverfront should cost around $61.1 million.
