Big News: Kansas City’s Newest Streetcar Has Arrived

Hey there, Kansas City folks! We’ve got some exciting news for you. The Kansas City Streetcar Authority just announced the arrival of the newest streetcar, and it’s a big deal. This is the first of eight new streetcars that will help extend the line by 3.5 miles south, making it easier for people to get around our awesome city.

What’s the Plan for the Streetcar Line Extension?

So, what’s the deal with this extension? Well, the plan is to connect Union Station to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. That means more people can easily travel between these two important spots. The new section is set to start running in early 2025, and they’ve already laid down two-thirds of the tracks needed for this project.

As for the rest of the streetcars, the company making them, CAF USA Inc., will send them over every four weeks. The one that just arrived is numbered #807, and it’s a beauty. It’s 77 feet long, weighs 78,000 pounds, and can hold up to 150 people at once. Plus, it can go both ways on the track, which is pretty cool.

But Wait, There’s More: Another Streetcar Line Extension

That’s not all, folks. There’s also a plan to extend the streetcar line by 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. They’re hoping to start this project this year and have it up and running by the end of 2025 or early 2026. This will make it even easier for people to explore different parts of our great city, like Sunset Hill, Rockhill, Volker, and the Country Club District.

How Much Will It Cost?

Now, you might be wondering how much all of this is going to cost. The south extension is estimated to be around $351 million, while the smaller Berkley Riverfront extension is expected to cost $61.1 million. But hey, it’s an investment in our city’s future, right?
