Newest Streetcar Arrives in Kansas City

Hey there! Did you hear about the latest addition to Kansas City’s streetcar fleet? The Kansas City Streetcar Authority just got their hands on a brand new streetcar, and it’s the first of eight they’re expecting. These new streetcars are part of a project to extend the line by 3.5 miles south, connecting Union Station to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. They’re hoping to have it up and running by early 2025.

Expanding the Streetcar Line

These new streetcars are super important for the extended line, and the company making them, CAF USA Inc., is planning to send the rest of them to Kansas City every four weeks. The first one, numbered #807, was shown off on Friday afternoon after it arrived from Elmira, New York. Each streetcar can go both ways on the track, is 77 feet long, weighs 78,000 pounds, and can fit up to 150 passengers at once.

Additional Expansion Plans

On top of the southern extension, they’re also thinking about extending the Kansas City streetcar line by 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. They want to start working on this project this year and have it open by late 2025 or early 2026. The southern extension is gonna cost around $351 million, and the extra bit to Berkley Riverfront should be about $61.1 million.
