Kansas City Streetcar Authority’s New Arrival

Hey, did you hear? The Kansas City Streetcar Authority just got a brand new streetcar! It’s the first of eight new ones they’re getting to help with a 3.5-mile expansion of the line. This new line will go from Union Station all the way to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. They’re planning to have it up and running by early 2025.

Streetcar Line Extension Progress

So far, they’ve laid about two-thirds of the tracks needed for this extension. The company making the streetcars, CAF USA Inc., will be sending the rest of them to Kansas City every four weeks or so. The new streetcar that just arrived, #807, was shown off on Friday afternoon after it came all the way from Elmira, New York. People got to see it for the first time on social media.

These streetcars are pretty cool – they can go both ways on the track, are 77 feet long, weigh 78,000 pounds, and can hold up to 150 passengers at once.

More Expansion Plans for the Streetcar Line

Besides the southern extension, they’re also planning to add another 0.7 miles to the streetcar line, going from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. They want to start working on this project this year and have it done by late 2025 or early 2026. The southern extension is gonna cost around $351 million, and the extra part to Berkley Riverfront will be about $61.1 million.
