Patrick Mahomes: Kansas City Chiefs Man of the Year Nominee for the Second Consecutive Year

In 1970, the Man of the Year Award was first presented to Johnny Unitas, quarterback of the then Baltimore Colts (now Indianapolis Colts). Although Unitas was an outstanding player, he was honored with this award for his off-the-field humanitarian efforts that greatly benefited his community. The award was later renamed the “Walter Payton Man of the Year Award” in 1999, in honor of NFL Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, who was known for his selfless humanitarian contributions.

A Prestigious Award for Off-the-Field Community Service

Each year, all 32 NFL teams nominate a player who they believe exemplifies outstanding community service contributions. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears currently hold the most Walter Payton Man of the Year recipients, with five each. The winner of the award is announced on the Thursday before the Super Bowl on CBS, with fan votes taken into consideration.

For the second year in a row, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been nominated for this prestigious award. If Mahomes wins, he will join the ranks of previous Chiefs recipients such as Willie Lanier, Len Dawson, Derrick Thomas, Will Shields, and Brian Waters.

Mahomes’ Impact On and Off the Field

Patrick Mahomes has made a significant impact both on and off the field in Kansas City. In 2019, he established the “15 and the Mahomies Foundation,” which focuses on improving the lives of children through health and wellness initiatives, as well as benefiting various communities in need. Since its inception, the foundation has distributed over $4 million in grants and programs.

Before the start of the current season, Mahomes and his foundation announced a national partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America. Mahomes has pledged to donate $1,500 for every regular season touchdown he throws to Boys and Girls Clubs of America, on top of the $1.625 million he has already donated to the foundation.

Mahomes’ philanthropic efforts extend to partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, granting the wishes of 10 children with life-threatening illnesses, and combating youth illiteracy through the “Read for 15” program. This initiative challenges students to read for at least 15 minutes a day for 15 weeks, resulting in a 12% increase in reading scores for participating schools.
